Malala has reached a major milestone in her recovery, and has been moved to outpatient status.

15-year-old Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who was shot by Taliban militants in October for being an outspoken advocate for the education of girls in her country, was released from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England earlier today. Although she is still being treated as an outpatient, and will have to be readmitted in late January or early February for more reconstructive surgery, the New York Times reports that she was able to leave the hospital “under her own power.”

The hospital’s medical director, Dr. David Rosser said,

Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery.
